Justin Heap, Steve Harvey, David Hare, James Brown

Blokart North-West and The BLSA provided an excellent weekend of blokart racing and all participants were left eager for the second event in Cornwall in October.

12-20knts blew both days at 20 degrees off the line of a 750 m long course set with a short 'wing' mark set downwind of the windward mark. A good spread of experienced sailors, first-time racers and juniors found all 12 races interesting, fun and educational.

Justin Heap ( lightweight performance) was dominant with as was Kiwi Steve Harvey ( heavy performance ).David Hare (Scotland) demonstrated a big jump in his abilities as did so many who have joined the sport in the last few years.
Saturday saw some good racing from Santi Oliver (Spain) but he found things harder on the Sunday when the heavyweights chasing Harvey were Kevin Meyers and Nick Dodge who enjoyed several close battles together.

New to blokart (his 3rd time in a kart) Jonathan Sharp - like Justin, a very experienced boat racer, was always at the higher end of the field as was Junior James Brown (Hey Mr Moody-'The Blowtorch' is in good hands! )

Everyone got stuck into their own personal battles within the races and this is one thing that makes these occasions a joy for all to be part of.

Much appreciation was rightfully given to Graham Bobin and volunteer BLSA team along with Chris Moore and Justin and Gwen Heap for making the whole thing work so well. Thanks to Adrian Brown for stepping into Race Officer shoes whilst his sons raced around him!

Special thanks to John Endean whose software along with AMB Transponder race timing system made for accuracy and speed with results which appeared like magic after each flight. This system has developed with Johns fastidious input at the US and French Opens made its UK debut and will now be hard to live without at Blokart races.

Open de France 2008

Enormous thanks to all who made this happen – not least: Philippe Lacoste ( The General) Santi Oliver,Javier Estarellas, Peter Bresnan , Johan Das and others!!

An event too good to be cancelled, the French Open at La Franqui, was resurrected by pilot power only to have excited anticipation appear doused at the last minute.

Southerly winds and heavy rain had left the site more suitable for dinghy sailing .

And so, arriving on the shore of one of the finest blokart sites in Europe- we were reassured by the determination of the Spanish and French pilots who had relentlessly scoured the area over the previous 24 hours for an alternative . After considering an area near Gruissan, the nearer beach South of Port-la-Nouvelle offered enough dry hard sand to roll over.

Relief from everyone as on the sunny Friday afternoon, 39 blokarters were having fun turning the marks at speed. Saturday stayed dry and a straight up and down course was laid.

Two weight classes only – the heavies and lights took turns to sail back-to-back pairs of 5 minute races. The first batch of these took place in 10-12 knots of wind and the 5.5 ‘s were out in numbers.

The Spanish team from Mallorca were dominant in most races with wins for Peter Bresnan and Santiago Oliver in the heavies where Mike Moody (USA) and Johan Das (NL) put up good competition.

The lightweight places were fought for all behind the pulley whips of Richard Chardet (NL) and Javier Estarellas (ES) who were almost in a match racing situation for the day with Dutch supremo and Birthday-Boy Richard having apparent effortless advantage at the end of it.

Production lights saw a close run fight between Sandra Smits (NL) and Cata Pol (ES) with Cata (now named “Catapult”!) finishing the day with a single point advantage.

Congratulations to Chris Moore for a UK third position in performance lights after a determined show.

Extra congratulations to Rosie Tribe who came to France as a blokart novice and took third in Heavy production (she may just enter a few more races!) Rosie will be a great asset to the sport with, apart from anything, plans in her professional position to introduce it to many UK schools.

Sunday was a day of rain and of false hope for racing at a kart track where no wind prevailed. All were happy to accept more food and the presentation.

Other Brits attending were Kevin Meyers, Tony Elliot and Darren Hall (respectively 4th 5th and 6th perf. H) and John Gillbourne (6th prod H)

In the overall Santi had strung a length of “0”s together to take outright champions slot sailing a production blokart! God help us when the devil sails in performance!

Thanks to Mad John E for sacrificing a race place and operating the BLSA transponder system which worked perfectly.

Thanks to RuRoc helmet systems for donating great prizes - hey I won one!!

Appreciation is also due to Mike Moody for his continuing mission as the world’s most travelled blokarter!

Thanks again to Phillipe and his assistants- for great organisation, catering and the perfect ‘vibe’ for the weekend.
